Who is Lord Parashurama?

Sri Parashurama Avatar is the sixth among the Dasavatara of Lord Vishnu. When Mother Earth (Bhudevi) could no longer carry the burden of the sinful, destructive, and irreligious monarchs who posed a serious threat to the pious, religious, and scholarly people, Lord Vishnu promised Bhudevi to take an avatar to destroy the evil and restore peace on earth. Accordingly, Lord Vishnu was born as Bhargava Rama to Maharishi Jamadagni and Renuka Devi. As he was blessed by Lord Shiva with a divine axe ‘Parashu’, he came to be known as Parashurama. Parashurama is considered to be chiranjeevi (immortal). Carrying the axe on his shoulder, he traversed the earth twenty-one times and defeated all the arrogant Kshatriya kings, wiping out the entire royalty.
