Lord Kala Bhairava, Guardian of Travellers
Kalabhairava Jayanthi, is the birthday of Bhairava, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. This auspicious day falls on the eighth day after the full moon i.e. the Ashtami phase in the month of Karthik. But this year, it is being celebrated on November 10, 2017 and also called as Maha Kalashtami, Kala Bhairava Ashtami or Kalashtami.
The word kaal has a very important denotation in our daily life because it means time and if your time is good you achieve everything and if it’s bad, life may be thrown completely out of gear. So, this deity Kalabhairava is the God of Time and sees that your tough times never last. The birthday of Kalabhairava provides the perfect settings for changing your bad times to good ones. For people living in foreign countries, the worship of Kala Bhairava is important.
The vahana of Lord Kala Bhairava is dog, therefore feeding and taking care of dogs is equivalent to venerating the God of Time. Lord Kala Bhairava is also the protector or guardian of travellers. According to great Siddhas, before embarking on a journey, especially at night, we need to pray to the deity for his protection by offering him cashew nuts.
